As the most admired functional potter worldwide, Warren MacKenzie believed that his ceramic pieces should be used, and he made many tea bowls, Japanese style Yunomi tea bowls. This tea bowl has an interesting mottled glaze. I believe Professor MacKenzie experimented with his glazes. First he applied a coat of Shino glaze, then a coat of beige/tan (sometimes called oatmeal glaze) over the rust color of the Shino. In the firing process, the rust orange glaze came through in speckles of brown and rust all over the bowl. As usual the foot is underglaze. His mark is stamped at the base above the circular foot ring.
